How to add a gallery with today's photos

The Today Photo Gallery is the easiest way to display the photos you take every day in your entries. It automatically shows all the photos you've taken today from the Photos app, right in your entry.

How it works

The Today Photo Gallery will communicate with the Photos app on your device to display the photos you've taken today. It automatically hides screenshots (although you can choose to show them), and you can hide individual photos to fine-tune the gallery.

Insert the Today Photo Gallery into an entry

The easiest way to insert the gallery every day is to enable it in your daily template. With a Template, the Today Photo Gallery is inserted automatically when you create a new entry using that template. To do that:

  1. Navigate to the Settings.
  2. Select a journal.
  3. Create a new template, or pick one from the list to edit.
  4. Insert the smart keyword $today-photo-gallery, or tap the picture on the toolbar to insert the keyword.

The gallery can also easily be inserted manually anywhere in an entry:

  • Use the /today-photo-gallery slash command.
  • On iPhone and iPad, tap the picture icon in the keyboard toolbar, and choose Today's Photo Collection from the list.

The Today Photo Gallery can also be inserted for entries in the past. When doing so, it will import photos for that day, making it easy to go back and write about a previous date or event.

Selecting photos

By default, all the photos and videos for the selected day are inserted. Tap or double-click the gallery to open the full gallery view. There you will find all the photos found for this day.

When you first open the gallery, you'll be in Customize mode. Here, each photo has a star and a trash icon.

  • Tap the star to highlight a photo or video. This way it will show up as one of the 3 thumbnails, shown in your entry and in the gallery.
  • Tap the trash to remove a photo or video from the gallery.

To exit customize mode, tap the Done button. To enter customize mode again, tap on Customize.

Screenshots are automatically hidden. To see them, scroll down to the bottom of the gallery, and tap on 4 screenshots are hidden. Tap to show them.

Storage

The Today Photo Gallery optimizes storage in your device and iCloud account by only saving thumbnails. The full photos and videos are linked to the Photos app, and are read from the Photos app whenever you view the gallery.

Deleting photos from your device's Photos app will also delete them from the Today Photos Gallery.

Missing photos

It's possible that you insert photos in one device but don't see them in another device. Here are a few reasons why this may happen:

  1. You don't have iCloud sync enabled for Photos, in your iCloud Account Settings.
  2. This device doesn't have permission to read your Photos. Navigate to your device's Settings app, then Privacy & Security, look for Diarly in the list. Then, enable Photos.
  3. Your photos haven't synced via iCloud. This could be due to having data saving mode or low battery mode enabled in either device.

The Today Photos Gallery makes it really easy to insert and view the photos photos you take every day, in your daily entries, while also optimizing your device's (and your iCloud account's!) storage.
